Authorities say a suburban Detroit police officer accused of writing a racially derogatory Facebook post has resigned.

Canton Public Safety Director Joshua Meier told the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/2fpOIkv ) that the unnamed officer resigned Monday after a year on the job. An internal investigation was being conducted but now will be dropped.

The officer was suspended with pay on Nov. 11.

That same day the department issued a statement referencing “a racist social media post” the officer was accused of making in a live feed on Facebook of a presidential election protest. The officer was accused of writing “go home monkeys,” allegedly referring to black people.

Meier called it an isolated and unfortunate incident that does not reflect the department.
