Michael Schumacher, the comatose ex-Formula One champion, received support from Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski.

Over the weekend, Podolski displayed the words, “Keep fighting Michael,” written on them. He wore them in a match against Hull City in which Arsenal was victorious, claiming their first title since 2005.

“My boots for the final!! And the best wishes to Michael,” Podolski, a member of the German national team, tweeted before he played.

Last week, Ferrari drivers and staff have gathered to send a message of hope to Schumacher and commemorate his first Formula One victory at the Spanish Grand Prix with the team he led to five world championships.

Drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen flanked new team principal Marco Mattiacci among about a hundred team members in front of a sign saying “Remembering your first win with us #forzamichael.”

Schumacher suffered a serious head injury in a skiing accident in December and was placed in a drug-induced coma. In April he showed some signs of consciousness.

Schumacher won his first race with Ferrari in 1996 in Montmelo. He went on to win five of his seven world titles with the Italian team.

A few weeks ago, his manager gave an update on the 45-year-old former driver’s status, but there’s been little news since then.

Kehm has previously said that Schumacher was “showing small signs of consciousness” after spending four months in a coma. “There are short moments of consciousness and he is showing small signs of progress,” Kehm said, according to the Daily Telegraph. “There are moments when he is awake and moments when he is conscious.”

Kehm continued: “Of course I am not a doctor, but medically, there is a distinction between being awake and being conscious, the latter meaning there is an ability to interact with his surroundings. I don’t want to disclose details out of respect for the family, but we have no doubt at all in the abilities of the doctors treating Michael, they are experts in their field.”

His manager also stated that “hhat upsets the family most is media quoting doctors who are not treating Michael and untruths are constructed from these,” she said. “It has been a problem when outsiders comment and it means we have to set the record straight, even when we don’t want to.”
