An 11-year-old Raleigh, North Carolina boy, Michael Morones, attempted suicide after he was bullied at school over his interest in My Little Pony.

Morones is in Wake Medical Center with a tube down his throat after the attempt. He faces potential life-long brain damage.

Michael’s parents say that he was bullied over the cartoon, which has a growing fan club of men and boys who describe themselves as “Bronies.” The bullying led to the suicide attempt.

“We won’t know for months how much is going to heal,” his mother Tiffany Morones-Suttle told WTVD. “It could even be years before we find out what potential for healing he has.”

My Little Pony teaches moral values, according Shannon Suttle Michael’s step-father, and Michael’s parents are not angry at the bullies.

“I’ve heard a lot of people say you need to go after bullies and hold them responsible,” said Tiffany. “But you know, I don’t think that’s what Mike would want. I would rather teach people how to do right than turn around than punish, because punishment doesn’t always work.”

However, even after the suicide attempt, bullying has continued online on a tribute website for Morones.
