The New York Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9–8 in 10 innings at PNC Park on Thursday in a make-up of the June 6 game that had been postponed due to bad weather.
This game started inauspiciously with a 42-minute rain delay and it looked like it was going to be another rough outing for the Mets, but the bats came alive in the middle innings, and Ryan Church provided his second game winning RBI in two days.
Mets starter Tim Redding had a bad outing lasting only 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits.
But pinch hitter Daniel Murphy started the comeback for the Mets with a two-run single in the top of the fourth.
The Mets took the lead in the top of the fifth with four runs on five hits, an inning Pirates starter Paul Maholm would not see the end of.
Fernando Tatis hit a two-run homer, his third of the year, in the top of the sixth to extend the Mets lead to 8–5.
The Mets bullpen did the job until the bottom of the seventh when Garrett Jones homered to right center off Pedro Feliciano, bringing the Pirates within two at 8–6.
Francisco Rodriguez came in to close out the game for the Mets in the bottom of the ninth. But Pirates third baseman Adam LaRoche stepped up to the plate and belted a two-run blast to right center, tying the game.
Rodriguez prevented further damage by then closing out the inning.
In the tenth, Fernando Tatis was hit by a pitch with two outs. After stealing second base, Ryan Church knocked him in with a single to center, giving the Mets a 9–8 lead.
Rodriquez then retired the side in the bottom of the tenth and, oddly enough, earned the win, improving his record to 2–2 on the season.
The Mets open a three-game series at Philadelphia tomorrow. They are now one game behind the Phillies in the NL East after the Phillies lost in Atlanta 5–2.
