Messi Chosen as Captain of ‘Galaxy 11;’ Samsung Behind Marketing Campaign Featuring Aliens

November 14, 2013 Updated: July 18, 2015

Samsung has quietly revealed itself as behind a viral marketing campaign that features aliens and soccer.

The “Winner Takes Earth” campaign began with weird symbols appearing in three different countries and mysterious men appearing at three separate soccer games in Europe.

The campaign included Franz Beckenbauer, the only man to have won the World Cup as both a player and a manager, saying that aliens are real, and that they have challenged mankind to a game of soccer.

“The fate of mankind hangs in the balance, and I fear that the winner takes Earth,” he said previously.

In a new video from Samsung, soccer legend Leo Messi is chosen as the captain of the team by Beckenbauer.

The other 10 players haven’t been chosen.

Messi, a longtime player for FC Barcelona, has the intergalactic skill of “Ultimate Alien Evader,” according to the Galaxy 11 website.

Samsung technology, including the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, and the Galaxy S4 camera, will help the Galaxy 11 win over the aliens, the website says, though it’s unclear how exactly it will do so.
