Merrick McKoy of Westminster in Colorado posted a picture of himself with his baby on Facebook and moments later shot the girl, killing her.
He then shot himself. McKoy is currently in the hospital in critical condition.
Along with the picture, McKoy posted two messages to the girl’s mother: “Don’t judge me had no choice,” and “I told u I can’t live without u lol u thought I was joking now me n Mia out this [place].”
Police in Colorado are interviewing Kim Phanthavongsa, the mother of Mia McKoy-Phanthavongsa, the 19-month-old girl who was fatally shot.
Phanthavongsa told police after the shooting that there was an altercation and she called police, saying her ex-boyfriend, Merrick McKoy, had a gun and he was inside her apartment with their child. McCoy was hospitalized with a gunshot wound, and he was reportedly in critical condition.
Westminster police spokeswoman Cheri Spottke said Wednesday no arrests have been made in the case.
A neighbor told 7News that the child has just learned how to walk.
“What an angel,” said Vannatda Sivixai. “Whenever she smiled it was bright.”
McKoy was previously arrested on Sept. 27 and charged with assault, burglary, trespassing, and telephone harassment in a domestic violence situation with his ex-girlfriend.
