A McKayla Maroney costume helped a woman who has recently been diagnosed with Bell’s Palsey.
Maroney, a gymnast, moves her mouth to her side when she is not impressed--a look remarkably similar to Barrett’s. Bell’s Palsey has temporarily paralyzed the right side of her face.
“Last week at a party someone pointed out that I normally look like your ‘not impressed’ face,” wrote Barrett on Facebook. “I decided to incorporate my disability into my Halloween costume and dress up as you.
“This has hands down been the best costume I’ve ever had,” she added. “It was the first time in months I got to look like I was intentionally making a face and it has helped me deal with the slow recovery a little better.”
People commenting on Facebook applauded Maroney.
“Awesome, Leslie!” said Robb Alan Munson. “My mom’s had Bells Palsy on and off for many years, love your ‘way of dealing’ and this was ultra cute!”
