A multi-purpose Commons Lounge equipped with an entertainment zone, a work place and a meeting space is the latest addition at the McGregor Park Recreation Centre in Scarborough.
Ward 37 Scarborough Centre Councillor, Michael Thompson and MPP for Scarborough Center, Roxanne James marked the opening of the lounge with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this Sunday afternoon.
“The new McGregor Commons Lounge is a great place for people of all ages to meet, exchange ideas and learn about their neighbours and neighbourhood,” said Councillor Thompson in a city release.
“The community now has an innovative place to congregate,” he said.
The Commons Lounge, located on Lawrence Ave. just west of Kennedy Rd., includes a space with couches and chairs, an entertainment area with a flat-screen TV and gaming console, desks and other facilities.
“Our government is proud to have invested in this local project and will continue to make investments in line with our priorities of jobs, growth and long-term prosperity,” said James in the release. She said the lounge will be ideal for local youth as a multi-purpose sports pad that should engage the community in cultural and recreational activities.
The government worked closely with the community to produce an ‘innovative and positive place [the neighborhood] can call its own.’ A community room and a landscaped courtyard are also part of the project.
Susan McIsaac, President and CEO of United Way Toronto who joined the councillor and MPP in the ceremony, also agreed that the lounge is of benefit especially for young adults.
“We all know that supporting our young people benefits the entire community... It will be an excellent resource for young people in the Dorset Park Community to develop new skills, share common interests and connect with local mentors and leaders,” said McIsaac.
Funding for the Commons Lounge came out of the collaboration of the federal, provincial and municipal governments with the feds and province each contributing $200,000.
The City of Toronto, United Way Toronto and the Youth Challenge Fund also contributed to the project.
