NEW YORK—Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s mother, Charlotte Bloomberg, died at age 102 in her West Medford, Mass., home of 66 years on Sunday.
“Today, my sister Marjorie and I lost our mother, Charlotte, after an extraordinary 102 years of life. As the center of our family, our mother’s unimpeachable integrity, fierce independence, and constant love were gifts that profoundly shaped our lives and the lives of so many who knew her,” the mayor said in a statement. “Our family recognizes how truly blessed we have been to have her live such a long and full life, and to be able to carry her spirit with us forever.”
Mrs. Bloomberg, born Charlotte Rubens in 1909, grew up in New Jersey and graduated from New York University in 1929 with an accounting degree. She attended both the mayor’s swearing-in ceremonies in 2002 and 2006 and had been active in her Jewish community through her 90s, serving as co-president of Temple Shalom. She was not present at the mayor’s third inauguration in January and has made less public appearances in the last few years. The New York Times reports that her health had been deteriorating in the last few months.
The mayor did not attend any of his scheduled events on Monday.
A memorial service will be held after the private burial at a later date to be announced by the mayor’s office.
