Mayor Bloomberg asked agencies in the city to develop free or low-cost activities for every borough, so the people can still enjoy the summer despite the economic downturn. “Government has a responsibility to help New Yorkers through these tough times, and that includes helping them enjoy the fun and excitement that our city is famous for,” he said.
The activities that Mayor Bloomberg mentioned include free concerts in public areas, free classes offered by the city government and the City Parks Foundation, volunteer opportunities, and spending time in Summer Streets.
“Last year, on several Saturdays, we closed seven miles of streets running right through the heart of Manhattan. This year, in addition to that, there will be Summer Streets for joggers, bicyclists and pedestrians in every borough.”
Mayor Bloomberg also recommended visiting Governors Island, which will be open on weekends until mid-October. Admission and a ferry ride to the island are free, and also include miniature golf and bike rentals. In addition, there are art installations on the island’s historical sites over summer.
