May Is Bike Month in NYC

In 1990, New York City planned to use one day to celebrate biking to work. Since then, the celebration has evolved into a month long event, complete with Bike Tours and over 30,000 people.

NEW YORK—Warm weather and bright sunshine make May a good choice for Bike Month NYC, which is presented by Department of Transportation and Transportation Alternatives. The initiative began in 1990 as a one-day celebration of biking to work, but has since evolved into a gigantic month-long promotion of the joy of biking through workshops, races, and other events. To kick off this year’s event, over 30,000 cyclists cruised on car-free streets on Sunday in the 42-mile TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour from Church Street in Lower Manhattan to Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, where a festival awaited those who weren’t too tuckered out.

Many more events await bike enthusiasts throughout the month. Some of the upcoming Bike Month NYC events are listed below, courtesy of bikemonthnyc.org. Visit the website for a full listing.
