Matt Cassel, the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, is “doubtful” to play against division rival San Diego Chargers on Sunday, coach Todd Haley said Friday according to the Chiefs’ website.

Cassel came back to the Kansas City practice facility on Friday morning. He underwent an appendectomy procedure several days ago.

“His presence at practice was the first step in making a return to the playing field,” writes Josh Looney on the Chiefs website. “For this weekend, however, Todd Haley has officially ruled Cassel as doubtful.”

League definition of “doubtful” means that the player has at least a 75 percent chance that he will not play, Looney noted.

According to reports, backup Brodie Croyle was taking more snaps in practice this week in the event that Cassel does not start.

“You always have to be ready,” Croyle said, according to the Chiefs website. “You never want to wish any ill will on anyone. Matt is one of my best friends on the team. Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with him, but if the opportunity comes this weekend I’m going to make the most of it.”

Cassel has not posted amazing numbers but has been highly efficient, throwing 23 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions while posting a 98.4 QB rating.
