A massive sinkhole opened up on Chicago’s South Side this week. The massive sinkhole was caused by a water main break, according to reports.
The sinkhole appeared at West 124th Street and South Wentworth Avenue on Sunday evening, reported NBC Chicago.
The sinkhole grew overnight and took up half the road, residents told the station.
“It’s really scary. The first thing that came to my mind is that everything [in the front yard] would sink right in,” Deloris Alexander, whose home is located near the hole, told NBC.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the sinkhole was caused by a water main break.
Resident Christopher Carter told the paper that he was surprised when his neighbor asked if he had water in his basement.
“I was asking her, ‘Why would you ask me, you know, something like that?’” Carpenter said.
When he looked outside, he saw water pop up in “about four different places” in the grass.
Then, he and his relative heard a “big boom,” he continued
“They all started screaming and yelling and running,” Carpenter told the paper. “And it did kind of scare me as well.
