The Miami Marlins have named former catcher Mike Redmond as their new manager, according to a report on the team’s website.

The 41-year-old Redmond was a big-league catcher for 13 seasons, and replaces Ozzie Guillen who lasted one season as Marlins manager.

Redmond was the backup catcher to Ivan Rodriguez for the Marlins in 2003, when they won the World Series.

“I think it’s a great hire, really,” said Jack McKeon, who was Redmond’s manager from 2003-04. “I think you’re getting a young guy in there who knows the organization. He’s a very knowledgeable young man. He’s very unselfish, and he was a dedicated player. I think he will do a good job.”

Redmond had been managing Toronto’s Class A Dundin team the last two seasons and was named Midwest League Manager of the Year in 2011.
