Markel Owens, a defensive lineman for Arkansas State University (ASU), was one of two men shot and killed, it was reported Thursday.

Owens was shot in Jackson, Tenn., in a duplex at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, THV-11 reported.

A woman was also shot, but she was taken to the hospital and was released.

“Today is a tough day for the Red Wolves family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Markel Owens’ family and friends at this difficult time,” the Twitter account for the football team wrote.

Owens is a native of Jackson, Tenn.

Arkansas State linebacker Trent Waters‏ wrote on Twitter: “R.i.P to my teammate nd bro markel man theres gotta be a better place than this in HEAVEN,” according to the Jackson Sun.
