Mark Madoff, the son of Bernie Madoff, took his life on Saturday, Dec. 11, on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest at the hands of U.S. federal authorities.

“Mark Madoff took his own life today. This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy,” said attorney Martin Flumenbaum, who represents Mark Madoff and his brother Andrew, in a statement.

At 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, New York police responded to a call from the 4th floor of 158 Mercer St. in New York City’s SoHo. A male was reported unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency medical services arrived, and declared him dead on the spot. Police confirmed the man’s identity as Mark Madoff, 46 years old, according to officer Michael Debonis from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information for New York City police. The cause of Madoff’s death has yet to be determined, said Debonis.

“Mark was an innocent victim of his father’s monstrous crime who succumbed to two years of unrelenting pressure from false accusations and innuendo,” stated Flumenbaum. “We are all deeply saddened by this shocking turn of events.”

Bernie Madoff was an investment advisor with the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, rising as far as becoming chairman of the exchange. In March 2009, at age 70, he pleaded guilty to having perpetrated a massive fraud through his company, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, to the tune of more than $50 billion. He is currently serving a 150-year prison term, after his Ponzi scheme came to light in December 2008.
