Maren Sanchez has been identified as the victim of an early morning stabbing at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut on Friday.

Sanchez was rushed to the Bridgeport Hospital but later died there.

A student said that the boy who stabbed Sanchez did it because she declined his invitation to prom.

The 16-year-old boy, a junior at the school, was taken into custody.

He remains unnamed as of yet.

The stabbing happened at 7:15 a.m. in a hallway inside the school, Milford Police Chief Keith Mello told the Hartford Courant.

A staff member witnessed part of the assault and rushed to help but was too late.

Sanchez was pronounced dead at 7:43 a.m.

“There was blood on her neck. It was awful,” said Sam Garcia, a junior at the school, as he walked home. “I saw the girl lying on the stretcher when they took her out.”

The junior prom is slated to be held on Friday night.

Sanchez was an active student, including being on the drama club and appearing as a guest on the student news television broadcast.

“She was an athlete, she was in the National Honor Society. She helped out with other athletic teams. She was very well respected and liked,” School Superintendent Elizabeth Feser said.

Chris Kulenych, an English and broadcast journalism teacher at Jonathan Law, added that “She did everything — people knew her that way. Today was just devastating.”
