Explosions are being felt by people near the Time-Life Building building in the Manhattan borough of New York City on Monday.

Black smoke was also seen coming from a manhole fire, reported Jonathan Woods of Time via Twitter. The fire is a transformer fire.

“FDNY telling people to stay away from windows on 51st st,” he said.

The first floor of 140 West 51 Street has been evacuated, and the FDNY is advising others on the second and third floors to shelter in place, Woods said. Other buildings on the street have also been evacuated.

Dan Linden of NBC reported that West 51st Street is closed between Sixth and Seventh Avenues as the fire department battles the fire.
