Police are searching for a suspect who allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint near Palo Alto High School in the early morning of Sept. 9.

A man in his 50s was walking north on the 900 block of El Camino Real adjacent to the school’s parking lot shortly after midnight when the suspect approached him to ask for directions, police said.

When the victim stopped to answer, the suspect allegedly pulled out a black handgun and pushed the victim off the sidewalk into an obscured area where the robbery would be difficult to witness.

The suspect demanded the victim’s property and the man turned over his wallet and cellphone. The suspect then ran to a car in the school’s parking lot and fled east on Embarcadero Road, according to police.

The victim didn’t suffer any physical injuries and reported the robbery to police on Sept. 10, in the afternoon, police said.

The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic man in his 20s who is about 5 feet 2 inches tall with a heavy build and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt over a red T-shirt and khaki pants. The suspect was driving a red late-1980s model Jeep Cherokee, according to police.

Police are investigating the robbery and said they might release a suspect sketch if the victim works with police artists. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police dispatch at (650) 329-2413.
