A man was shot dead outside a Times Square sports bar in the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to police and eyewitnesses.
Police say that the suspect is at large after fleeing the scene of the shooting outside Tonic, a Times Square bar at around 4 a.m. on Dec. 19.
New York police report the 33-year-old man was shot in the head, according to CBS New York.
He later died in hospital, despite the efforts of bystanders to keep him alive.
The incident comes one week after a pipe bomb was exploded in a nearby underground passage, and two weeks before one million people are expected to flock to the area for New Year’s celebrations.
One witness told NBC4 that the suspect, without a word, shot the victim as they walked out of the bar, which is just two blocks from Times Square.
“There was no fight or anything like that,” the witness said. “It was so quiet. They just came out of the club and we heard the shot.”
“I walked out into a crime scene without even realizing,” said John Keen, 65, who works nearby told NY Daily News.
PIX11 reports a source that said the shooting occurred after last call and that several people, including the victim’s girlfriend, tried to help the victim.
The victim was taken to a hospital where he died.Police said the suspected shooter fled north on Seventh Avenue, according to PIX11, wearing a black skull cap and a black jacket.
One witness told 1010 WINS that she tried to keep the victim alive.
“I was also trying to help the woman whoever was with him, I don’t know what relation she was to him, but take his pulse, I tried to start CPR but she was still all over him, trying to hold him.”
