VISTA, Calif.—An argument between two neighbors in Vista escalated into a shooting on July 5 that left one of the men dead and the other under arrest on suspicion of murder.

Deputies responding to a report of an assault with a firearm found Juan Valdovinos, 37, suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso in the 100 block of Camino Corto, near Vista Village Drive, about 11:30 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Paramedics took Valdovinos to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Lt. Joseph Jarjura said.

Witnesses reported that the victim and the suspected shooter, 32-year-old Jose Gonzalez, were arguing outside their homes when the gunfire erupted. Deputies soon found Gonzalez in the area, confiscated a gun from him, and took him into custody.

“At this stage of the investigation, the nature of the relationship between Valdovinos and Gonzalez is unclear,” Jarjura said in the late afternoon. “The motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation.”
