A 26-year-old man died in hospital in the first fatality surrounding the London riots. He was found in a car in Croydon, South London with gunshot wounds.

Police were called at about 9:15 p.m., local time, Monday night to Warrington Road in Croydon. Two people believed to be in their late 20s, were arrested at the scene for handling stolen goods.

The man has not yet been named and it is not clear how his killing relates to the rioting.

The death is being investigated by Operation Trident, the Metropolitan Police team dedicated to the crackdown on gun crime in the black community in the capital, and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Operation Trident was directly involved in the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan in a minicab in Tottenham last Thursday that sparked the bedlam that has descended on London since Saturday.

A peaceful protest to express frustration over the slowness of revealing information about Duggan’s death escalated into the first instance of the current mob violence in London on Saturday.
