In Bristol, Tennessee, a man was trying to kill his son with a chainsaw when his son ran over him with a lawn mower in self-defence, police said.

Douglas Ferguson, 76, had to have one of his legs amputated after it was hacked by the lawn mower. Ferguson also suffered hits to the head.

While the incident occurred on June 28, police did not serve the arrest warrant until Oct. 9 because Ferguson had been severely injured. He is being charged with attempted second-degree murder, with bond set at $25,000, the Bristol Herald Courier reported.

His son was mowing the lawn when his father approached him with a running chainsaw, for reasons not known, police said.

“The son defended himself against the attack by running over the suspect with the lawn mower,” read a press release from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, obtained by the Kingsport Times-News.

“The injuries that the suspect (Ferguson) sustained were as a result of the lawn mower striking and running over him.”

Ferguson and his son have had an ongoing feud, according to police.

Ferguson is also being arrested for having violated parole on a previous aggravated assault, according to the Times-News.
