The registrar of the Global Center for Quitting the Chinese Communist Party reported that the family of Yan Li of Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province was informed on Dec. 7 that Yan Li, who had been kidnapped by police in Inner Mongolia two weeks earlier, was dead. The local police station wanted to dispose of the case by giving the family 5,000 yuan (US$603.86). Mr. Yan was a Falun Gong practitioner. He was arrested with another Falun Gong practitioner in that practitioner’s home in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia on Nov. 22 and was reported dead a dozen days later. According to police, the authorities charged Yan with “Subversion of the State” because they discovered a copy of The Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party (published by The Epoch Times ) and some materials about Falun Gong. The police said that after Yan was arrested, he started a hunger strike to protest the persecution. So the police force-fed him on Nov. 26. On Dec. 4, he was sent to a hospital for emergency treatment.
On the morning of Dec. 7, when Yan’s wife, Yuan Yingping, went to the Hongshan police station. The police took her to the intensive care unit on the fifth floor of the Chifeng Second Hospital. She saw Yan’s lifeless body covered with a piece of white cloth. When she removed the cloth, she found that her husband was naked. He lay face up on the bed, his limbs stiff with his eyes wide open.
Bowing to intense pressure from the local judiciary and the police and deeply in shock form seeing her husband’s corpse, she signed an agreement to take 5000 yuan compensation and not to prosecute her husband’s unlawful death in custody. After she returned to her hotel, she calmed down and considered what had been done to her husband and to her, and realized that, had her mind been clear, she would not have signed the agreement.
Although she was confined to the hotel, her guards were lax, and she slipped by them while they were eating.
Yuan said, “Yan Li was murdered. I won’t take the 5,000 yuan. I would not take it even if they tried to give me 500,000 yuan.” She decided to look for help from a lawyer to sue.
After Yuan escaped from the hotel, the National Security policemen of Chifeng were nervous. They searched the entire city throughout the night. They rented a room in a hotel to monitor Yan’s other family members. Before 8 a.m. on December 9, seven vehicles from the legal department kidnapped Yan’s six other family members. They asked Yan’s eldest brother to represent Yan’s wife to sign the approval to cremate Yan’s body, and quickly cremated his body without the presence or approval of his wife.
