BRASHER FALLS, N.Y.—State police say a freak accident involving a riding lawn tractor and a dog leash resulted in the death of a 62-year-old northern New York man.

Troopers say Timothy Alguire of Massena was using a tractor to mow a lawn at a home Tuesday afternoon in the St. Lawrence County hamlet of Brasher Falls, near the Canadian border 140 miles northeast of Syracuse.

Police say Alguire was mowing near a deck attached to the home when the blades of the tractor became entangled in a cable dog leash attached to a post embedded in the ground next to the deck.

The post broke near its base, causing it to fall and hit Alguire in the head.

He was taken to the hospital in nearby Massena, where he was pronounced dead about an hour after the accident.
