A four-year-old Taiwanese girl was decapitated by a man outside a Taipei subway station on March 28.

The gruesome incident occurred in the Neihu district, where a man approached the child while she was riding a bicycle, grabbed her and beheaded her with a kitchen knife, Taiwan media reported.

The girl’s mother said she was walking just a meter behind her daughter, and thought the man was trying to help her ride up a hill, only to realized he had different intentions. He started slashing her daughter with the knife instead.

Officers are still trying to find out whether the suspect particularly targeted the child and why.

The mom screamed for help, according to local media reports, while people pinned the suspect down until the police arrived.

Television footage shows a mob of people gathering outside a local police station trying to punch the suspect, some brought along baseball bats.

According to KFVS 12, the case’s chief investigator said officers are still trying to find out whether the suspect particularly targeted the child and why.

Police are questioning the 33-year-old man named Wang Jingyu, who’s unemployed and has a record of drug-related crimes, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency. He also had previously been treated for mental illness.

Taiwan president Ma Ying-jeou called for a full investigation to “ensure justice be served.”

According to Mashable, after Jingyu’s arrest, police searched his home and found a notepad with scribbling that read: “Killing Sichuan girls can extend bloodline.”

People mourned the little girl on March 29 with numerous flowers and tributes at the scene of the crime.
