Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department detected a case of drug internal concealment at Hong Kong International Airport on Oct. 10 and seized about 1.2 kg of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about HK$1.2 million (approx. US$152,000).
Tsang Yau-chuen, Acting Senior Investigator of the Airport Investigation Group of Customs Drug Investigation Bureau, pointed out that the 43-year-old non-Chinese man arrived in Hong Kong on Oct. 9 from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, via Bangkok, Thailand.
The man carried little luggage when he arrived at the airport, and he did not have a hotel booking, and no record of visiting Hong Kong in recent years, which aroused the suspicion of the customs officers who sent him for an examination at the hospital.
After a preliminary examination by a doctor, it was found that the man had foreign objects hidden in his body, and the Customs officers arrested him subsequently.
Until 10 a.m. on Oct. 11, 59 pellets of suspected cocaine, weighing about 1.2 kg, were excreted from his body in the hospital, with an estimated market value of about HK$1.2 million (US$152,000).
Customs said the case was still under investigation and the man was being detained.
