A man from Cary, North Carolina, has been charged with murder after he left his elderly mother lying on the floor, dying,

Eric Paul Brunner, 39, has been charged with second-degree murder and elderly abuse, the News & Observer reported.

Brunner, who was the caretaker of his 74-year-old mother, Cynthia, left her lying on the floor after she fell, even though he knew she would die.

Wake County investigator J.N. Yoakum said that Brunner “admitted that he knew his inaction would likely lead to her death and he wanted her to die.”

Brunner “believes she has as much as $30,000 in the bank that he would have access to after her death,” Yoakum said in a search warrant application.

The warrant application stated further, “Based on his statements that she was moving or ’squirming,' it is believed that she was alive for some time after falling,” WRAL reported.

“Mr. Brunner admitted to investigators that his mother was alive and made attempts to communicate with him for some time after falling, however, he willfully failed to assist her. He further admitted that he knew his inaction would likely lead to her death and that he wanted her to die.”

Deputies believe Cynthia Brunner fell sometime between Feb. 13 and Feb. 19, when Brunner reported her dead.

Investigators hope that autopsy being conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s office will help narrow the time frame.

Brunner was arrested on March 13 and is scheduled for a hearing on April 14. His bail is set at $1 million.
