WICHITA FALLS, Texas—Police in North Texas say a 20-year-old man has been arrested after being accused of fatally shooting one teenage girl and injuring another girl as the two students were walking home from school.

Kody Austin Lott remained jailed Monday on three counts: murder, aggravated assault and possession of a prohibited weapon.

The Wichita Falls Times Record News reports Lauren Landavazo and Makayla Smith, both 13 years old, were shot Friday afternoon while walking home from their middle school.

Landavazo was killed. Police say Smith is in stable condition at a hospital.

Wichita Falls Police Chief Manuel Borrego says Lott was arrested Sunday afternoon and he later confessed to the shooting. Jail records did not list an attorney for Lott.

Police have not given a motive for the shooting.

“I had a seatbelt wrapped around my throat, he pushed me down the stairs and busted my head on the dash of his car. It was just a really abusive relationship,” Hailee Clayton, Lott’s ex-girlfriend, said of their relationship, Newschannel6 reported.

Borrego added to the Times Record News: “This affected our whole community, so it was with much gratitude that our citizens got involved with us. Also, I have to give a lot of credit to the long hours put in by our detectives. We weren’t going to end until we got this thing solved.”
