Ning Er County of Pu Er City, located in China’s Yunnan Province, suffered a magnitude 6.4 (on the Richter scale) earthquake on the morning of June 3. The initial quake was followed immediately by thousands of aftershocks.
Xinhua Net reported that the county’s rescue squad office said the earthquake destroyed numerous buildings. In Pu Er city, approximately 360,000 were totally demolished, 90,000 were flattened, 120,000 severely damaged, and 150,000 sustained slight damage.
China Customer Net (www.china-customer.net) reported that Ning Er County’s rescue squad office statistics from June 5 revealed that the earthquake affected 224,600 buildings, and a total of over 1 million people.
The quake struck at 3a.m., but the more than one thousand proceeding aftershocks still contributed significant destruction. Twenty-six of the aftershocks were above magnitude three and the largest one—a magnitude 5.1, occurred at 10:49:05 a.m. Due to the high rate of disaster caused by the quake, over 180,000 people required relocation.
According to Yunnan Dialy , the area is suffering from a severe shortage of emergency supplies. This includes the lack of tents, clothing, food, medicines and other necessities. The area is in the middle of its rainy season, yet victims have been forced to live outdoors. This already poor region desperately lacks the money to improve its condition.
According to Hong Kong’s Apple Daily , due to the lack of tents most disaster victims were left with merely a piece of canvas as their shelter. On the evening of June 4, a rainstorm created even more desperate conditions for victims of the quake.
