Mae Young, one of the most famous women in pro-wrestling history, has not died but is gravely ill, it was reported.

TMZ said the 90-year-old had not died after reports said she had. She was hospitalized and placed on life support in South Carolina weeks ago.

The Post and Courier newspaper said that she had died after she was taken off life support, but it later updated its story, saying she is still alive. The story was later taken off the website.

Another report from the Post and Courier said “reports of WWE Hall of Famer Mae Young’s death were incorrect.”

“That report is incorrect. Young has been gravely ill. The source who told The Post and Courier that she had died had incorrect information. Mae is gravely ill, but still alive,” it said. “The Post and Courier regrets the error.”

Other reports said she was taken off life support. “Sad news to report,” Mike Mooneyham of The Charleston Post & Courier tweeted Wednesday. “Received word tonight that #MaeYoung has been taken off life support. Prayers for this grand lady of wrestling.”

Young started wrestling at the age of 15. Her first match was in 1939 but she last appeared in the ring in 2010.

She won the WWE’s Miss Royal Rumble in 2000 when she was 77.

On Twitter, a large number of people offered their condolences for Young after it was initially reported that she had died.

“One of my all-time favorites to work with. Such a good sport. You will be missed,” wrote Jerry “The King” Lawler on Twitter.

Jim Ross, the WWE announcer, wrote: “Conflicting reports on Mae Young. She’s been taken off life support and is reportedly gravely ill. Tougher than hell.”
