[xtypo_dropcap]A[/xtypo_dropcap]lunar eclipse was in clear view to New Yorkers very early Tuesday morning, Dec. 21. Epoch Times photographer Gary Du was on hand to document the event. Enjoy the photos!

The eclipse fell on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the transition between fall and winter.

The eclipse lasted about three and a half hours and the totality, when the moon was completely covered by the Earth’s shadow, lasted 72 minutes, according to NASA.

It has been 456 years since the last time these two celestial events coincided.

U.S. sky watchers will have to wait until April 15, 2014 to see their next total lunar eclipse.
