The year 2010 has seen the lowest number of civilian casualties in Iraq since the beginning of the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, according to numbers published Thursday by the NGO Iraqi Body Count (IBC).

In total 3,976 civilians died in Iraq this year according to the IBC. Suicide bombings and other explosions have been responsible for two-thirds of civilian deaths.

The organization counts and crosschecks the civilian deaths that result from violence and are reported by hospitals, media and other NGOs.

In October WikiLeaks published 391,832 classified reports from the Iraq war, consisting mostly of field reports. According to IBC, the WikiLeaks reports documented an additional 15,000 cases in addition of the already 108,398 documented civilian casualties since 2003.
