It’s been six years since Meet the Fockers and a decade since the first in this series, Meet the Parents. Little Fockers has a lot to live up to—its predecessors pulled in over $800 million worldwide combined.
Unfortunately, this three-quel feels slow, is somewhat played out, and is definitely less funny than the previous two. Instead of laughing 80 percent of the time as in the previous two films, the audience chuckled maybe 20 percent of the time throughout Little Fockers. The jokes just weren’t as funny because the theme has become old.
But it’s expected, and when you go in to watch this movie you do know what you’re in for—an exceedingly absurd battle between extremely overbearing Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and Greg Focker (Ben Stiller).
Now, to be fair, there aren’t many comedy three-quels that have been successful, with the exception of Toy Story 3. So, with that in mind, Little Fockers is a decent comedy, perfect for families to enjoy during the holidays.
The plot is relatively simple. Gaylord, aka Greg Focker, and wife Pam (Teri Polo) are parents now, with twins Samantha and Henry. Hilarity ensues when the Byrneses (De Niro and Blythe Danner) drop by for the twins’ fifth birthday party. A beautiful female pharmaceutical sales rep, Andi Garcia (Jessica Alba)—a name that gets plenty of laughs—temps Greg to consider a moonlighting job to earn extra income.
Jack’s former CIA tactics come into play as he suspects foul play. Owen Wilson, reprising his role as Pam’s ex-boyfriend Kevin, throws the twins their lavish birthday party, and Bernie and Roz Focker (Dustin Hoffman an Barbra Streisand) drop in at parts throughout the movie with their fockerish anecdotes and over-the-wall lifestyles.
It’s very funny at times and silly throughout. The jokes sometimes go to drastic extremes, but it’s all in good fun and laughter. If you laughed through the first two, you’ll laugh through this one. Don’t expect to be blown away, but expect to walk out of the theater jolly and happy—as you should be for the holiday season.
