Rapper Lil' Wayne started his one-year prison term Monday due to gun charges, after several delays in the sentencing.

Last month, he had dental surgery before he started his term and last week, a courthouse fire delayed his sentencing yet again. His lawyer said via an AFP report that he will spend his term in Riker’s Island but will not have to mix with dangerous criminals.

Officials say that because of his fame, the 27-year-old rapper, born Dwayne Carter, needs to be put into protective custody, which goes against his wishes. A gun was found on his tour bus last October and faced a weapons charge to which he pleaded guilty.
