With the summer months upon us, it’s important to keep watch while children are playing in the pool

Intended as an eye test, one video shows how difficult it is to spot someone who is drowning.

“Amazing lifeguard rescue at our wavepool! Can you spot the person drowning?” wrote Lifeguard Rescue.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that drowning is the second-leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 4 in the U.S.

The video highlights how difficult it is to spot a drowning person even in a crowded swimming pool.

Meanwhile, it shows why it’s necessary to go swimming with a lifeguard present.

The CDC says that“everyone should know the basics of swimming (floating, moving through the water) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).”
And also, a four-sided isolation fence with gates is necessary if children are present.
“This can help keep children away from the area when they aren’t supposed to be swimming. Pool fences should completely separate the house and play area from the pool,” it says.

The agency also calls on parents to use life jackets.

“When kids are in or near water (including bathtubs), closely supervise them at all times. Because drowning happens quickly and quietly, adults watching kids in or near water should avoid distracting activities like playing cards, reading books, talking on the phone, and using alcohol or drugs,” it says.

According to Poolsavety.gov:

1. Never leave a child unattended in or near water. 2. Teach children how to swim. 3. Teach children to stay away from drains. 4. Ensure all pools and spas - both in your backyard and any public pool you may visit - have compliant drain covers. 5. Install proper barriers, covers and alarms on and around your pool and spa. 6. Know how to perform CPR on children and adults.
