A political staffer for the federal aged care minister has been elected to Tasmanian parliament after a recount.

Liberal Felix Ellis, who works for Senator Richard Colbeck, on Aug 17 won the recount for the northern House of Assembly seat of Braddon.

It was triggered in late July by the resignation of government backbencher Joan Rylah, who was in 2019 elected on a recount after former minister Adam Brooks quit.

Ellis received more than 90 percent of the votes in the countback, which was contested by four other candidates.

The next Tasmanian election is due in 2022, with the Liberal government holding 13 of 25 lower house seats.

Rylah, 65, earlier said the time was right for her to step down and allow Ellis to establish his credentials.
