As millions of families came together to celebrate a traditional meal, many chose to give back and share their Thanksgiving Day to help thousands of people in need who might not have had a chance for a proper meal.

Josh Satterthwaite, operations manager for Great Performances, a New York City catering company teamed up with the Salvation Army to feed over 1,000 people across three locations in Manhattan, Harlem, and Flushing.

Over 40 volunteers cheerfully bustled at the Salvation Army on 14th Street on Thursday helping to serve a full feast of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, pumpkin and apple pie, sweet potato casserole, and all the fixings.

Satterthwaite has been helping out for three years, and calls it a pleasure.

“It’s a way to give back,“ says Satterthwaite. ”It’s what I do for a living every day of the year but it’s so much nicer when you can really do it and really help people. We’re used to feeding very privileged New Yorkers so it’s a nice change of pace, to offer them a nice meal for Thanksgiving that they might not have otherwise.”

The company worked all day Wednesday to prepare the food in their downtown kitchen.

“They all want seconds, so they seem to enjoy it,” said Satterthwaite. “People have been really appreciative, they’ve all been so kind and polite and it’s really been a pleasure.”
