Round 8 of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Premiership League last Saturday Nov 24 threw up the biggest upset of the season so far—Valley knocking off Club.

Bottom-placed ONEwork’s Valley team pounded their traditional rivals and Round 7 league leaders, Newedge Club 34:18—their first loss of the season—at So Kon Po Recreation Ground. This left the door open for second-placed Leighton Asia HKCC to capitalise—which they did.

HKCC won their match at Aberdeen Sports Ground in fine style 59:16, against SCAA Standard Life CWB Rams, taking them to the top of the League Standings.

Meanwhile, Abacus Kowloon also came away victorious from a tight, hard-fought match with Borrelli Walsh Tigers, putting the top three teams all within a band of four points.

The Kowloon-Tigers match at Kings Park was particularly exciting. This was an all-action contest that was nip and tuck all the way through. There was very little to choose between the teams and the score kept oscillating backwards and forwards.

With two converted penalties to Kowloon and a converted penalty and try to the Tigers, the half-time score was 6:10. At that stage, the Tigers seemed to have the edge and looked more determined and hungry to win.

The Tigers looked even more in control when they added to their score early in the second half by notching up another penalty to take the score to 6:13. But fortunes changed and three minutes later Kowloon ran in a try under the posts to level the score at 13:13.

A penalty to Tigers pushed them in front again to 13:16, but Kowloon forced another penalty to make it 16:16 with 7 minutes left on the clock.

With the clock clicking down to zero, Kowloon were awarded a penalty close to the touchline, which was amazingly slotted between the posts to make the score 19:16.

In injury time, Kowloon were awarded another penalty under the post to clinch the game 22:16.

Next Week: Premier matches on Dec 1 are: ONEworks’Valley vs SCAA Standard Life CWB Rams at So Kon Po Recreation Ground; Verizon HK Scottish vs Borrelli Walsh Tigers at Shek Kip Mei; with the match of the round going to the top of the table clash between Leighton Asia HKCC and Newedge Club at Aberdeen Sports Ground.
