A number of people urged authorities to conduct an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s reported suicide after the news broke on Aug. 10, including Christine Pelosi, a Democratic official and daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

“There must be an independent investigation into the Jeffrey Epstein prison death,” Pelosi said in a statement, adding that Epstein had to have had assistance from someone if he truly committed suicide.

“How a man could succeed in killing himself in a heavily guarded federal prison after a first failed attempt should shock the conscience. Someone helped by commission or omission. As has been Epstein’s pattern,” she wrote.

“Jail suicide[s] are rare. We had a few in my community. Some connected to people whose families complained about lack of access to meds and others accused of serious violent crimes. All a gross failure of authorities to do their one job—keep the innate [sic] alive in decent conditions.”

Pelosi warned after Epstein was arrested in July that “it is quite likely that some of our faves are implicated but we must follow the facts and let the chips fall where they may—whether on Republicans or Democrats.”

Others also called for a probe into Epstein’s death, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.).

“We need answers. Lots of them,” wrote Ocasio-Cortez.

“I agree @AOC,” Gaetz said. “Chairman @RepJerryNadler should prioritize a Judiciary investigation into how Jeffrey Epstein died in federal custody (in Nadler’s own neighborhood!) over the Kavanaugh confirmation (which already happened), and the Russia hoax (which never happened).”

“The Bureau of Prisons is part of DOJ. This should prompt an immediate and comprehensive DOJ Inspector General investigation to determine who is responsible,” added Michael Bromwich, a lawyer who represented Brett Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford earlier this year.

Political activists also called for a probe.

“.@realDonaldTrump should immediately direct the DOJ to launch an investigation into the death of Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein was on 24/7 suicide watch. If he did commit suicide, he didn’t do it by himself,” wrote C.J. Pearson, a conservative activist.

“Epstein should’ve been on a 24-hour suicide watch. This should’ve been impossible. And it strongly suggests malfeasance somewhere along the line where he was being held. He had *many* names to give up,” added Seth Abramson, a professor at the University of New Hampshire and liberal activist, calling for a probe.
