The Latin America Memorial, or the Memorial da América Latina, caught on fire in Sao Paulo, Brazil in the Barra Funda neighborhood on Friday.
Globo TV reported that firefighters were on the scene as the auditorium was burning.
Photos uploaded online show smoke pouring out of the facility.
A spokesperson with the memorial said the fire was caused by a short circuit at the Simon Bolivar Auditorium, reported MSN.
At least half of the auditorium, which can sit 1,800 people, was damaged by the fire.
“It’s a beautiful space, it is sad for all of us,” the president of the Memorial Foundation told Globo.
