A man in Tennessee is planning a two-screen drive-in movie theater on his wooded property on the site of the former Nashville Sky Harbor Airport. The larger of the two screens (65 feet high and 120 feet wide) would perhaps be the biggest in the United States, David Stansberry Jr. told The Tennessean.

The plan is submitted to the city of Murfreesboro for necessary permits.

Stansberry, who has five kids, wants the drive-in theater to provide family-friendly entertainment, and wants to have an outdoor play area, arcade games, and possibly other attractions to keep kids busy until movies start.

He said the idea came when about 100 family and friends celebrated his 40th birthday on his land, and someone suggested a drive-in theater. “A light suddenly went on in my head, and the idea was born,” he said.

About 350 cars would fit into an area to watch movies on the larger screen; for the smaller screen, about 120 to 150 cars would fit in the parking area. A tree line will separate the two screens from each other, and other trees will block people driving on nearby roads from seeing them.

There are currently 15 drive-in theaters in Tennessee, according to attorney Ted Goodman.
