[xtypo_dropcap]M[/xtypo_dropcap]ore than 100 tons of marijuana were seized after a shootout Monday in Tijuana, a Mexican border town near California.
Eleven were arrested in what Mexican President Felipe Calderon called “a very strong blow to the financial structures of organized crime in our country,” reported CBS news.
The drugs are thought to be worth $335 million on the street in Mexico, and possibly two to three times as much in the United States.
Authorities originally found 10,000 packages of marijuana, all labeled with different colors and graphics. Another 5,000 packages were found after further raids in Tijuana, reported AFP, so the total amount will likely be more than the 105 tons originally reported.
Security spokesman Alejandro Poire told a press conference, “This is the largest seizure in the country’s history of marijuana prepared and packed for sale and distribution,” reported AFP.
The operation is thought to have been working under the Sinaloa gang, run by one of Mexico’s most wanted men, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
