The Los Angeles Police Department released footage of an officer-involved shooting that left a homicide suspect dead and an FBI agent injured.
The FBI agent who was hurt is still recovering after being shot in the wrist, officials said. No other officers were hurt.
Officials were looking for Valdez in connection with a fatal shooting of a man in the same neighborhood on July 31. Valdez allegedly shot 41-year-old Jason Ruelas over a dispute.
Ruelas’ mother said she allowed Valdez, a cousin of her deceased husband, to stay at a store in South Los Angeles. But when Ruelas asked him to move to a trailer, he refused.
On July 31, Ruelas told him that he had to leave. When Valdez contacted the police to get squatters’ rights, officers arrived and told him to leave, KTLA reported.
Later that day at 4 p.m., Valdez shot Ruelas and one of his friends.
A week later, officials found Valdez at the Central Inn Motel, Commander Alan Hamilton said.
Valdez, in the incident, appears to start shooting at those who had congregated near the hotel office. The officers then return fire and he dropped to the ground.
In the officer-involved shooting, the LAPD and other units fired a total of 15 shots. Valdez was struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead by paramedics, the LAPD said in the video.
A .38-caliber revolver pistol was recovered at the scene, officials said.
