The lockdown on Lanier High School in Austin, Texas was lifted on Tuesday as police were investigating a suicide.
“A student shot himself at Lanier High School a short while ago. The student has succumbed to the wound,” the Austin Independent School District said via Twitter, citing the city’s police department.
“We are saddened by this tragic loss,” said Meria Carstarphen, the superintendent of the district, in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family.”
Parents and staff were notified through phone and email notifications.
The student has been identified as Adrian Alvaresz by fellow students.
The student shot himself to death in the courtyard at 12:04 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Alex Hernandez, a junior, said Alvaresz was sitting alone in a courtyard outside the cafeteria during lunch when he pulled a handgun from his hoodie and shot himself, reported the American-Statesman.
The Austin Independent School District will provide counseling services for students, parents, and staff until 6 p.m. in the health science wing. People needing help are also encouraged to call Austin Travis County Integral Care’s crisis hot line at 512-472-HELP (4357).
The lockdown was been lifted and students were dismissed.
“Buses are available to transport Lanier students home. Parents also may pick them up at school,” said the ISD.
The school is in north Austin.
