Abacus Kowloon finished the season on the top of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Premiership League standings table after defeating ONEwork’s Valley 26-11 in their final match at their home ground at Kings Park on Tuesday night (Feb 5).
Kowloon had romped home 78-8 winners with a dominating display at home against SCAA Standard Life CWB Rams last Saturday (Feb 2), proving that they are the form team heading into the three-week final series.
Justifiably confident, they will now take a psychological boost as the best performed team in the 12-week season straight into the Semi-finals, following the advantage of having had a bye in the first week of finals.
Meanwhile, Newedge Club succumbed to the call of the Verizon HK Scottish pipes 19-13 at Shek Kip Mei last Saturday (Feb 2) and play their final match against the Rams at home tonight (Thursday Feb 7). But, the result of tonight’s match is unimportant. Club can only finish in second spot and Rams will stay one off the bottom of the table.
In the ONEwork’s Valley match against Leighton Asia Hong Kong Cricket Club (HKCC) at So Kon Po Recreation Ground, also last Saturday, Valley held on to win 31-28 after a late surge by HKCC just failed. A try by Cricket Club in the dying minutes brought them within three points and although the conversion from the side line was missed HKCC still needed another score to change the result of the game. The win for Valley put them in striking distance of making a fourth position finish in the league.
Tonight’s Club vs Rams match is the last clash in the Premiership League home-and-away season as the competition now moves into its finals series. The losing team of each final match in the series will be eliminated, so for all teams from here on it is a do-or-die situation.
