SEOUL—South Korean researchers said on May 18 that they have developed a candidate human vaccine against A/H1N1 influenza.

According to the Yonhap News, the vaccine was developed by a research team led by Professor Seo Hang-Heui from the college of veterinary medicine of the Chungnam University.

Chungnam National University said the vaccine is not toxic and can be mass produced at relatively low cost.

The researchers received the standard virus sample from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on May 4, and developed the vaccine using genetic recombinant technology in 11 days.

Seo promised to provide the vaccine for free to the South Korean government and research institutes and pharmaceutical businesses around the world.

WHO statistics indicate that in the past three days confirmed H1N1 cases increased at about 1,000 people per day. Keiji Fukuda, the Assistant Director-General of WHO, warns that this influenza will spread even further.
