Two kittens were found colored blue and green, possibly by a permanent marker. Police found the felines in West Yorkshire, U.K., on April 25 while they were looking into a separate animal welfare issue.

The kittens were brought to Bradford Cat Watch Rescue where they were bathed and fed. But even after two baths there was still much ink on them.

“This is a dreadful act of cruelty and who knows what untelling damage this may have caused,” stated Katie Jane, a volunteer with the animal rescue organization, in a Facebook post.

She described the kittens as 4 to 5 weeks old. Based on a “noxious” smell of the ink, she judged it came from a permanent marker.

Jane said police were present because of another animal welfare issue “involving a dog and drug related offenses” when they found the kittens. There was “no mummy cat in the property,” she said.

She consulted the Veterinary Poisons Information Service to find out how to get the ink off. “[W]e are being extremely cautious around the face area,” she said.
