Kirsten Dunst stars in All Good Things with Ryan Gosling and Frank Langella, which released on Dec. 3.
The film is based on the story of Kathleen Durst, who disappeared in 1982 in New York City. It is surmised her husband Robert, from the wealthy Durst dynasty, was responsible.
Dunst, who plays the wife, met the missing woman’s family in preparation for the film.
"It was really nice, but it was difficult, because I’m playing someone who was so dear to them that went missing. I just listened, basically,” Dunst told MTV News.
"It seems difficult for [Kathie’s family] to know that this man who did this to her, his family, no one helped or did anything, and [Kathie's family] didn't have the means to help find her," Dunst added. "So, I think they're so relieved that the story is being told and brought to light."
Dunst’s last major role was as Mary Jane in the Spider-Man series. But she, Tobey Maguire, and director Sam Raimi were not rehired for Spider-Man 4.
The 28-year-old told Reuters that the drop was unexpected. “We didn’t know when we shot the third one that it would be the last. Maybe we would have cherished that time a bit more, knowing it would be the last one for all of us.”
Dunst is currently working on two new projects—On the Road, based on the novel by Jack Kerouac, and Melancholia directed by Lars von Trier.
