A police shooting left an officer dead and the suspect over the weekend in the town of Killeen. Another police officer was injured in the Central Texas town.

Police got into a shootout with a man armed with an assault rifle at an apartment complex in the town, reported The Associated Press.

Authorities said officers were called to the Grandon Manor Apartment after the suspect threatened people in a pool with a gun.

The suspect was killed in the gun battle at the apartment complex, located the Killeen Mall, police said.

In the incident, police said they initially found the man in his apartment and attempted to negotiate with him. However, he fired a shot.

The suspect then came to the door with his hands up but would not come out.

Later, he grabbed his rifle and shot at the officers, injuring one and killing another.

“In 1917... that’s the last time an officer was killed here,” Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith told KHOU. “We’re having to take this one step at a time; we’re all grieving. The family’s grieving. We’ve got a great officer that’s going to be deeply, deeply missed.”
